My thoughts...
Sooo....Paula Abdul. What in the world do I even say? Let me start with how incredibly sad I am. For me, each judge on the show had a specific, invaluable purpose.
Randy is the producer...he tells you about the pitchiness, the style, all the great stuff that any producer worth their salt is going to tell you at some point. So, thank God for Randy preparing us for that part.
Simon is the executive...he’s the bottom line. He tells you what will and won’t work. Sure, he’s blunt about it, but so are most executives. That’s why they’re good at what they do. In his heart of hearts, he wants the best for you. Seriously. :-)
But Paula...sweet Paula, is the heart...the artist...the mama...the one who understands what you’re going through and empathizes with you. The one who knows you may just need to hear ONE good thing...even if it’s that your makeup looks good. She’s also the one judge that comes to the rehearsals for the AI tour and still offers that encouragement and advice that you quickly realize you still need to hear after all the cameras have turned off.
I realize I am not mentioning Kara. That is only because I don’t have a personal experience with her. I’m sure she provides something new for the contestants now and they probably need her just as much as I needed the other three.
I don’t want to play the blame game, because I don’t know the whole story. I’m sure there’s much more info behind Paula’s departure than what’s being portrayed in the media. All I will say is that, no matter what happened, I’m upset! I want Paula! Booooooooo!!!!!!! The show won’t be the same without her. Whether you were her biggest fan or her biggest critic, you have to admit that she will be missed.
So...since I have the world’s craziest imagination, let’s imagine that in the midst of all this craziness, Paula has time to read this blog. Here’s what I want to say to her....

Thank you for being the heart of the show that changed my life. Thank you for understanding. Thank you for celebrating with me and crying with me. Thank you for being there. Thank you for standing up for me. Thank you for loving with everything you have and for genuinely caring. I know that no matter what happens, your talent and your heart will take you wherever you want to go. I will always be a fan of not only what you do, but who you are. I love you and I can’t wait to see what’s next for you.

At times Paula seemed too sappy and didn't give enough good feedback, but I liked here a lot, have been and always will be a fan, and will miss her tons, the show will not be the same. Thank you for your great perspective on each judge! I think you summed it up very well and when people think of them that way, they understand why they are giving the feedback they are.

Paula will be missed but with every door closing another will open! We'll be seeing Paula.

What a beautiful heartfelt post to Paula! I was so thrilled to see that she was able to read it, and mentioned it moved her to tears on Twitter. I always had a hunch you were very close to Paula. Speaking of "crying together", I'll never forget that precious moment on A.I. when you moved yourself to tears after belting out "Home". You moved Paula to tears as well after that great performance! When you were asked by Ryan afterwards about what just happened, I loved it when Paula said "She just had an out of body experience!" Thanks so much for supporting Paula during this time! This was a beautiful tribute to Paula. I tweeted her too! I never watched AI but I am a professional ballerina and I also sing at church and local events. I saw the recaps of the show and always saw how sincere, compassionate and tenderhearted Paula was toward even the worst of contestants. She was sometimes the window to a person's soul and the wings beneath their wings. You did her time at American Idol justice and I believe in the end they will hate what they lost. But like they say, "You only miss it when it's gone." Paula has greater things to do and I'm looking forward to her putting her talent to use on the dance floor and in the music studio. Well said. She was half the reason I tuned into watch. It killed me to see these kids-and that's what some of them were-in tears on stage. What you said about needing to hear a compliment, ANY compliment, is entirely true, and that aspect of the show will be gone. And you, Melinda, out of all of the contestants on every season, you are BY FAR one of the most memorable. You're a classy, down-to-Earth, talent women. Your family should be proud. Best of luck in all you do; you deserve it.

Don't know how to feel - my favorite show is done for in my book. Last years changes bummed me out, but I figured they'd come to their senses and "tweak" things back. But no Paula? It's like taking one of the "Friends" out of "Friends" - it just won't work anymore, at least not for me. I hope things change or I'll need a new "family night" show for me and the fam. None of us like Kara.
We all love YOU, however, so maybe you could be a judge if Paula doesn't come back. In fact, season 6 was when I really got into the show.

Melinda said it best when she said Paula is the heart of the show...the heart of the judges panel. The show will not, could not be the same without her which is why my family and I have decided to boycott the show on Paula's behalf. And I hope many many fans do the same to send the message that Paula is just as significant as the other judges who have made American Idol what it is. I'm very disappointed in those who had a hand in making her feel somehow less important, or not as worthy of the salary that comes with job the judges do. Paula, I have no doubt you will persevere, in many ways I'm sure you already have. Walking away from the table only validated your self worth. I think you made the right decision. I'm sure i speak for all of your fans when I say, we wish you well.

melinda, this blog is fantastic. I can't say more. I can't tell you how much Paula will me missed. Fox has been terribly wrong and stupid. What do we have to do with Victoria Beckham and Kara?? And... I am actually really curious how Simon thinks about all this since I haven't read anything about his thoughts (and the same for Randy!!)
Melinda I think your post was a wonderful tribute to Paula. It did give an insight to the judges and you summed each one up perfectly.
We will miss her very much, however I will not boycott the show because there are still the many hopeful contestants waiting for their big break. As for you - you are a fabulous singer - love your voice.
