Top 4 Rock Week...

Okay, so it is 1:30am EST and yes, I am blogging.
You see, I am in NYC and I had a show and a dinner tonight and then I came back to my hotel...and because of the wonders of the Slingbox, I was able to watch American Idol from my DVR at home in Nashville. That is the coolest thing EVER in the entire world!!! (A special thanks to the family who made this possible)
All this to say...I have so much to say about AI tonight (this morning), I just had to blog. Twitter and Facebook couldn't handle my thoughts for the night.
Here we go!

1. Adam
This was obviously going to be a good week for him. I would have been extremely shocked if he had a bad night. What I love about Adam is that he is pretty consistently flawless. I am in awe of his voice. Whether you like him or not, you almost have to admit that his voice can do some pretty amazing things!

2. Allison
It's no secret that she is my favorite. She has THE most creative instincts for any singer her age. That being said...even though she nailed her performance vocally, this was not my favorite of her song choices. Sadly I say this and cannot think of an alternative at the moment (maybe because I'm almost asleep). She still came in an incredibly strong 2nd for me tonight.

*Kris and Danny duet
This was interesting...I am unable to critique this well though because I spent most of the duet being upset for these two guys. We all know that rock music can be pretty hard on the voice, so why make them sing their duet before they sing their solos??? Why couldn't Adam and Allison do theirs at this point? On top of that, why not spread the "rock" love and split up Adam and Allison to make the duet playing field a little more even? So, not only do they have to scream their voices raw, but they are at a distinct disadvantage as a duo. Ok...I'm finished with this one...sorry for rambling.

3. Kris
I love this song! It is one of my favorite Beatle songs. This, however, was not one of my favorite Kris nights. Don't get me wrong, I still think he's a cutie and a great singer, but realy the only think "rock" about this was the band. I am all for making the song your own, but I am also all for taking full advantage of working with Slash and finding that inner rocker somewhere. Maybe it was because he was flustered from having just done a duet and then running to change clothes during the commercial break and being ready to blow your own song out of the water. Dang it...I'm supposed to stop talking about that one.

4. Danny
Ummm....what do I say? I feel Danny's pain (See Latin week Season 6). Everyone is allowed to do a song that is not necessarily them. It totally happens and I have all the sympathy in the world for him. However, that last note did kinda freak me out...mainly because it sounded like it hurt...a lot! Here's hoping he's okay and that singing the duet before that performance did not mess him up. (I know, I know)

* Adam and Allison (My top 2)
Awesome!!!! The best part of this was that Allison easily held her own with Adam and didn't even break a sweat. That's my girl! I loved every second of it and was almost able to get past my frustration with the whole duet thing. I still feel that they had a real advantage, but it was almost worth it to see the awesome-ness that occurred!

THE WRAP UP:
So, if I'm going by performance alone, I'm thinking they actually went in the perfect order tonight. Adam, Allison, Kris then Danny. However, I think Kris might be in trouble because I'm pretty sure Danny's fans have made the rally of their lives (They are some awesome fans...but they have nothing on the Backups). All I have to say is Allison better not go home. Enough said!

I seriously need to know what you guys think....I'm so curious about this show!!!
Love you bunches and hope to hear from you soon, (Nighty night!)
Me

Yeah, the duet thing was stacked against Danny and Kris for sure. Someone didn't think that through at all (having to sing together before their actual performance).

I love ya dear but I've disagreed with you this entire season and it didn't stop tonight. I think alot of the Allison stuff is the same mothering instinct you had with Jordin. The vocals are just not there. She mumbles something fierce and I just can't get past that. It always surprises me that you don't mention it.

I'm feeling a little of Kris-hate in the show. Even when he delivers stellar performances he never gets labeled as a "frontrunner" and even Simon hinted that during Danny's critique. And pairing them two in their duet was plain unfair.

I think Adam and Allison were well (but their duet was superb hands down). Kris was OK. If I base my choice for tonight's performances I would have to say that Danny should go home. That was atrocious! (And I don't think he's been as great as Kris all around the competition).

I can't vote, so I just give my 2 cents anywhere I can.

By the way, Melinda. Is there a way to be a Backup in Mexico?

LOVED YOU EVER SINCE YOUR AUDITION!

P.S. I just bought your CD and I love it!

I admire Danny for taking the risk....when they played it back at the end..it didn't sound bad...I'm still a huge Danny fan..I love the mastery he has over his voice..his technique and natural ability...during the critique I just wanted to tell him to keep his chin up...Adam and Allison did a tremendous job...and Kris..who is so talented musically did well...I loved Slash...hardcore rocker..this was a great one..

I pretty much agree with you on everything. Adam and Allison were amazing. Kris did better than I expected, and I was actually impressed with his performing (not necessarily his singing) in the duet. Danny disappointed me tonight. It definitely wasn't one of his best performances.

I agree, the order tonight was unfair. At the very least they could have done duets between the other performers (ie: Adam, duet, Allison...) so Kris wouldn't have had to sing twice in a row. I'm not even a Kris fan, but I felt like he got the short straw tonight. I even threw in some Kris votes out of guilt!

I'm expecting Allison and Kris to be in the bottom two, even though I think Danny was by far the worst of the night. I'm pulling for an Allison/Adam finale!

I agree with you, Melinda though Adam is absolutely my favorite. I love Allison too, though. What composure and presence for a 17 year old! And I love her voice too.

I think you nailed the analysis. OK. I too felt sorry for Danny but he has some very awesome fans. So I think Kris is in trouble and may be going home tomorrow. I loved Allison's and Adam's duet most of all.

PS Allison is my husband's favorite too. He's pretty spot on recognizing super talent. He loves you after all. And so do I.

Oh my, Melinda,

I agree with you for the most part. I probably would rank them Adam, Allison, Danny, Kris. Even though Danny's last note might have been awful, overall the performance was better (and more memorable) than Kris'.

I'll give Adam props, but there's just something about him that's there under the surface I just don't like (a darkness?). . . can't quite put my finger on it. And I'm a rock fan. So, it's weird for me to feel this way. Don't get me wrong Adam has talent out the wazoo. Just don't think I'll buy his CD and I would with any one of the other three.

That's my two cents,
~Cheryl

I think your analysis was good. The scream Danny tried that only Steven Tyler could pull off, was agonizing to watch and hear. Not good.

Allison mumbles too much so I can't understand why you like her so much and I can't understand why she is still on the show. The producers may be concerned about gender demographics.

Kris may be next for getting voted off the island. The duet was good only when he did the harmonies w/ Danny. Alone he seemed flat. Simon was right; Danny was better.

Adam...well...nuff said. He's the one to beat.

I did spend the rest of the night voting for Alison and Danny.... I felt so sorry for Danny---bless his heart....

Adam--even though he creeps me out a little-- voice his amazing.... but just cant bring myself to vote for him....

I really think Cris will leave tonight-- but who knows....

and BTW.. you cant take any more engagements on Tuesday NIGHT.. I missed all your facebooks and twitters.. It was boring for me just texting 3 of my work friends instead of texting, twittering, facebooking, etc etc during Idol.

Cant sait to hear Daughtry tonight...

Love you Melinda...

Hope you have a wonderful show lastnight. Same here Allison, she is my favorite not crazy about Adam probably my age. That kind of arrangement of song just don't go with my ears. lol. To be honest i am not a rockers fan music. Allison also my favorite. I did love her performance. Kris omg Melinda he didn't do great work with the song i don't know i did feel he was nervous on the stage probably the reason of Simon comment with the duet. I know i know Dany was in pain but you don't have to forget it is a competition and Dany didn't do a great work there. So two for me are in the bottom Dany and Kris. Who going home for me will be Kris. Because Dany have strong fans base

I agree, Allison can't go home. I can't wait to find out what she's going to sing each week. I hope we see Danny finally in the bottom. Hard to say who should go home though. They're all good.

I'm reading a lot of hate for Danny's performance on Twitter, but I thought it was good until the last shreiky notes. Danny has never been in the bottom 3, so I think he has enough fan love to push him through to next week. I love Kris' song, but the performance was unremarkable. I think Kris will go (of course, I thought that last week, too). Loved the Adam/Allison Duet. Love you too, Melinda!

Yeah, this was a tough week to watch as a non-hard rock fan. It's not my style so I didn't enjoy the good performances, and I'm freaked out that my favorite (Kris) will get kicked off. Bring back the soft & tender stuff!

What I don't understand is why the judges still talked up Danny and talked down Kris, when Danny had that ghastly note at the end!

My man is Danny and that last note did seem painful but I have to say he didn't back down from a challenge. Something that was out of his realm. And I hope voters see that and vote likewise. I'm not a big Adam fan but I, too, would have been shocked if he didn't do well this week. My order would be Adam, Danny, Allison, and Kris. Just my 2 cents (or 72 words) :D

Adam blew me away again. Am I the only one that sees a bit of Elvis in his face at times during performances? (I only see flashes of it when he performs.)

I can't wait to hear Allison sing that song when she is older and has experienced more. I think it will be amazingly better.

I, too missed your tweets last night and my husband and I loved seeing you perform every week on AI.

I missed it tonight too, but started voting for Allison as soon as I could. I got home and watched it and had the exact same opinions as you. Adam is flawless, Allison was amazing but not my favorite performance from her, Kris was okay, just wasn't for him, and Danny was a mess. LOVED the Adam/Allison duet. They have been my dream finale since the start, so I really hope it comes true.

Both you and I have been right every week about who's being sent home, but this week is VERY difficult. I think Kris possibly, but then you have to factor in the "cute factor". Hmm...

I agree with Megan ... hard week to pick who's going home. Hopefully Allison stays for another week. And while I liked the duets, I really think Idol should have stuck with the two song format.

Adam was awesome! He really owns the stage and is so comfortable there. You don't realize it until a week like this and you see the others. His duet with Allison was great and showed just how at ease he is when performing. She kept up with him very well, I loved it. I didn't care for Allison's song choice that much but maybe because I don't think songs where you repeat the lyrics over and over and over make good competition songs. Still, it's VERY hard to sing Janis and she did it very well.

Danny and Kris were out of their comfort zone. They tried hard, and I think too hard. They should have picked different songs but their duet was quite good. I agree, they should have sang that after not before.

I think pairing Adam with someone else would have been better for the other contestants, but this IS a tv show and Adam and Allison were great for the audience, and the ratings. ;)

I like them all, but someone has to go and I pick Kris. I think the others fit the Idol mold better, but I still like Kris.

Great review! ...and they STILL need to get YOU on the show!

Great review. I didn't actually think about how much of a disadvantage it was for Danny and Kris to do their duet before their solos, but you're right, that was really unfair. And while it was also unfair of them to pair Danny and Kris instead of splitting up the rocker love of Allison and Adam, their loss was the viewers' win!! Allison and Adam were incredible. It was the best thing of the evening.I bet they do that on tour so I might just have to go!! They totally nailed Allison's look. Love the black streaks and the long extensions . .she looked fab in the combat boots.

I thought the judges were way harsh on Allison though. I did not mind the song choice. While it did not have a lot of melody, those types of "shouty" rock songs are very common and also are the ones that seem super bad and cheesy if done poorly. I thought Allison did it great.

I am hoping for Kris, the snoozefest, to go home tonight. Being cute is not enough. Danny may have done worse, but I love the sound of his voice and felt bad for him last night and it is really his first bad effort, imo.

I agree with your run-down (thanks for not twittering it , too; luv to hear your full thoughts)! Add this one little yikes! - why did Danny choose the same song that sent Michael Johns home? Bad ju-ju on that song! :-(

Allison FTW!!! ;-)

I agree with most of what you said! Especially the thing about Adam's voice. So many haters out there who say he is terrible.. It's ok if people say he isn't their style or their favorite, but cmon! The guy has major talent. People who don't see it are clearly blind. (I must say his clothes did freak me out last night.. wish he would dress like a man all the time.. :/) Allison did amazing! I kinda wanted there to be a little more energy in her performance, but it was awesome! As far as the duet thing goes, I can see where oyu are coming form.. but really could you see kris and adam doing a duet?? I think they paired them up according to their styles so it'd be easier for them to agree on a song and such. I felt bad for Danny. I am a huge fan of his.. and was so embarrassed after that last note.. Hopefully, he'll have a chance to show people what he really has next weak. Kris... yeah, I like him. I like him fine.. but he has gotten to top 4, and I do think it is his weak to go. His voice just can't compare to the others.. It seems very limited.. Also, I'm a big Beatles junkie and didn't appreciate his version of that song at all. :/ Why do a Beatles cover when it is never possible to do better than the original? It only makes you fall short.

I really hope Allison stays too!!

Kris is my favorite, but I think tonight's song choice may have done him in...& that duet coming first didn't help any.
Danny was o.k. good vocals til the end, & Allison was good, too, but I do agree that she sometime is not very clear, but I think that goes along with her rocker music more than the slower tunes.
Glad I'm not the only one who sees a bit of Elvis in Adam. His smile when he's not performing, or when he's getting critiqued somehow seems so genuine & transforms the hard, rocker image he shows much of the time. I think that's just a "stage persona". His vocals are always "right on". Not sure if his very theatricality might not hurt him in the end though.

Well sweetie it looked like poor Allison got the boot. I however thought it should of been Kris. I agree that some people can see Rock and some can sing country. It will be interesting from here on out who will the two finalist be. Sure glad to hear that you are doing good. You should of been the winner not Jordan. I love Jordan but you were the definite winner.

I was thinking about you last night because you were our top choice the year you were on and so this AM I decided to google you and see what you were up to and there you were!! I am a total Kris nut and was thrilled to see him in the final 3. Adam is definitely the top runer in our family. I have really been getting a little bored with Danny- until Jazz week he was amazing that week. But until then everything pretty much sounded the same-really great-but the same. Surprised to Alli go.
